Calamondin

Calamondin (Citrofortunella microcarpa) is a decorative indoor citrus native to Southeast Asia. Its defining feature is real miniature fruits, 3–4 cm across, that adorn the plant year-round. Flowers, green fruits, and ripe orange fruits can all appear on the same plant at the same time — a truly stunning sight. The fruits are edible but very sour.

Place it on the sunniest windowsill you have — calamondin needs at least 4–6 hours of sun a day. Water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged, roughly every 5–7 days. During the heating season, mist the leaves or use a humidifier nearby — dry air is the biggest threat to citrus plants in winter. Feed every two weeks from spring through autumn with a specialist citrus fertiliser.

If the leaves start dropping, the most likely cause is dry air or a sudden change of location. Safe for people. ✓ May cause mild stomach upset in cats if ingested — keep away from pets.
