The pitahaya is distinguished for its pleasant sweet taste reminiscent of a mix of bananas and strawberries.
How to eat it: Cut the fruit in half and eat the flesh with a spoon, or extract the flesh and serve in pieces.
Pitaya, pitahaya or dragon fruit, is native to South America; long ago, the atzecs used its pulp and seeds for food, they crushed and added them to soups. The fruits are slightly elongated, up to about 20 cm long, the skin is smooth and dense, covered with small oval scales with bright green tips resembling dragon scales. The fruit easily peels off the pulp containing a lot of seeds, which still let you enjoy the delicious and juicy fruits. Pitayas are cut in half and eaten with a spoon; the pulp may be removed and served chilled, in pieces. In 2013, Taiwan researchers called payahayu the healthiest fruit. It is abundant in calcium and C group vitamins, while its seeds are a source of Omega-3 fatty acids. The main difference of red pitahayas from white ones is the pulp colour and taste.
